What We Do
Shelter Outreach Services of Ohio is a non-profit veterinary service serving the communities of central Ohio. Starting in February, 2007, SOS of Ohio will travel to different shelters in different counties to provide affordable high quality spay/neuter services for both shelter animals and companion animals from households in need of subsidized veterinary care. In addition to spay/neuter services we will provide medical consultation, general wellness, and consultations on behavior for the animals in the shelters.
Program Goals
Surgical Services
To provide necessary spay/neuter services for companion animals, including:
- shelter dogs and cats and other stray/unclaimed dogs and cats
- feral cats, barn cats, cat colonies
- dogs and cats from rescue organizations
- dogs and cats from families of low income
Basic Medical Services
To provide necessary basic medical care for the above populations, including:
- Physical Exams
- Vaccinations (DHLPP, FVRCP, RV)
- Advise on Infectious disease testing (when appropriate)
- FeLV tests (cats only)
- HW tests (dogs only)
- Parvo tests (dogs only)
- Advise on Parasite control (when indicated)
- Intestinal parasites
- Ectoparasites (fleas, ticks, ear mites)
- Heartworm preventative
Education
To provide education in the following areas:
- Public (basic veterinary care, animal stewardship, importance of Spay/Neuter)
- Shelter staff
- Humane education for area school children
- Veterinary students/interns/residents
Partnership
To work in conjunction with:
- Local communities
- Other humane organizations
- Animal Sanctuary
- Ohio State University, Columbus State Community College, and other institutions of higher learning
