Information For Shelters
Shelter Outreach Services of Ohio is a MASH style unit. This means that our equipment is portable. We travel to different locations and set up our equipment to create a sterile environment in which surgeries can be performed. For shelters interested in working with SOS of Ohio, we will come to the area and try and find a suitable location to set up the service. This can be in your shelter or a neighboring location that is willing to donate the space. The area will need to be climate controlled with enough space to house the animals having surgery that day. Ideally, we need one room for surgical prep, one room to perform surgeries, and one room for recovery. If the space is large enough (like a warehouse) then one room will suffice.
Shelter Outreach Services of Ohio will also provide medical consultation for animals in the shelter at no charge. Any medications required will be charged at cost.
We will perform 25-30 surgeries a day. The shelter/rescue group that we are working with that day will determine the schedule. They can fill the schedule with shelter pets, or outreach to the general public to provide low cost services to families in need. Smaller groups can work with other rescue organizations in their area to fill a full surgery day if needed. We would like to arrange a regular schedule, visiting each group/area at the same time each month. Depending on the volume needed, we can schedule you once a week, once a month, etc.
SOS of Ohio provides high quality spay/neuter. We will perform pediatric spay/neuter at 2 month and 2 pounds. Pediatrics will require special care, and we will train you how to care for them appropriately. All animals are given pain medications. All animals are treated pre-operatively with antibiotics.
The rescue groups/shelters that we work with will be responsible for providing 2 volunteers on the day of the clinics. We will train these volunteers in advance. The groups will need to do their own fundraising to pay for the surgical fees. Payment will be required on the day of services unless otherwise arranged.
